We’ve all seen those cute wooden signs online. They look great in the listing photo. But if you hang a standard plywood sign outside your house, the clock is ticking. Between the rain and the afternoon heat, plywood will split, rot, and delaminate faster than you think.

That’s why I am so picky about materials. For outdoor decor, I skip the wood and use 1/2-inch thick expanded PVC. It looks just like smooth, painted wood, but moisture can’t soak into it. Bugs won’t eat it. It won’t split down the middle with the summer heat..
